The Case of Shestopalova in Birobidzhan

Case History

In October 2025, Elena Shestopalova, a resident of Birobodzhan, learned that a criminal case had been opened against her for reading the Bible with her friends. Her house was searched. The case went to court in March 2026, and in June the sentence was handed down—two and a half years suspended. In August, the Jewish Autonomy Court considered the court of appeal and upheld the verdict.
